Baseball Coaching Lesson from the Super Bowl
Wow. Great Super Bowl.
I wanted the Pats, but loved the game. Really classic stuff.
I don’t know about you, but I was emotionally spent after
the game. Took me watching half of a bad romantic comedy
with my wife afterwards to be able to sleep.
What I admired was how “full out” they played. Especially
the Giants, but both teams layed it out there.
You expect that from a Super Bowl, but too often one team
can’t handle the emotional tidal wave and their efforts are
wasted like they’re trying to swim against a riptide.
As you know from Heads-Up Baseball (currently the #14 best
selling baseball book on Amazon… 12 years after it came
out) and from my Confidence Conditioning programs, you
can’t control whether or not you win a game.
(I had a great session with a HS baseball team on that on
Saturday, perhaps I’ll come back to give details another
time).
A key to success is to figure out what you can control and
do a great job with it.
I did some exercise a while back about how I know when I’m
being successful. What are the ongoing indicators that I
can use to know whether I’m in a “green light” or high
performance state?
One was what I called “letting it rip.” When I feel like
I’m letting it rip I’m at my best.
With my 1-1 clients and baseball coaching I’m coaching “from the hip” instead of
my head.
With my emails I’m writing fast and I’m writing at below a
6th grade reading level (according to my software this
email is written at reading level: 5.7).
So what are your indicators of success? Are you letting it
rip? What is your Super Bowl? How would you know if you won?
Good questions.
