Baseball Training: A Giant Lesson in Teamwork
The Giants, like pretty much all champions, gave us a lesson in
teamwork.
Particularly, as I see it, team energy.
Didn’t they seem to have a great vibe? Wow. They just felt
unstoppable.
The Rangers were that way with the Yankees, and the Rays. I was
very impressed they came here after losing two games at home and
stopped the Rays mojo.
Cliff Lee is a momentum turner, of course.
Except when he ran into the relentless Giants. The Giants just had
too much of the Force on their side.
How do you get that Force thing?
I think of teamwork like a tug of war, with your whole team on one
side of the rope.
Ideally, they all pull straight back — straight in the direction
of the goal.
But usually that’s not what happens on a baseball team.
Usually some guys are pulling straight back, but others are pulling
to the side, to a direction they want to go.
Perhaps they pull in the direction of their own stats. Or of
one-upping a teammate. Or of wanting to look good.
Or they pull in the direction of “poor me,” “I’m in a slump,” “I’m
no good.” All those negative thought patterns are like players
pulling in a direction other than a straight line path to the team
goal.
They put their own failings above the good of the team.
Of course, everyone pulling in the same direction doesn’t guarantee
success, but it gives you your best chance.
Champions emerge when talent, leadership and some good fortune are
combined with everyone pulling in a straight line path to the team
goal.
They are a Force to be reckoned with.
Ironically, pulling toward team goals is ultimately more rewarding
than individual accomplishments.
Which guys on your team are pulling in a straight line path to the
team goal, and which aren’t?
Thank you, Giants and Rangers, for your wonderful examples.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tom
