How to GO DEEP More Than Pujols

For the past few weeks I’ve been going deep into player’s
heads at a much more profound level than I ever have.

It’s amazing.

I feel like the mental game Albert Pujols.

As players (and some enlightened coaches) take The
Hanson I get to see how they think at levels I’d only
imagined before.

I work with a select few players 1-1. I get to know
what makes those players tick pretty well… by the
end of the program!

Now I can meet with a player the first time and know
EXACTLY where to go to unleash his power. I can tell
him things about himself HE didn’t even know.

One thing I’ve noticed is how many players can really
see and understand the the “x’s and o’s” part of the
game. As a group they know mechanics and tactics of
the game pretty well.

This stands to reason as this is the part of the game
most coaches focus on. Technique, technique,
technique. It’s not the coaches’ fault, our Western
minds are trained to focus on external things.

But this is just one part, I’d say 1/6th, of the game!

Without that 1/6th you’re in trouble, but if you fall
down on the other 5/6th you’re toast too!

Not surprisingly I’m finding that players’ capacity
for seeing and understanding the “outer game”
generally far exceed their “inner game” skills.

In short, they can SEE and UNDERSTAND WHAT to do, but
their beliefs and focus habits block them from doing
it. They are blocked from performing near their
physical limits.

And they don’t know why. They can’t see the blocks.

Unless they take The Hanson.

We all have physical limits, but very few players ever
come close to finding out their genetic limits. I know
I didn’t.

Winning Baseball Vibes: Dr. Tom’s Birthday

Winning baseball and business and girls and everything else is all about energy.  Better vibes = better success.

I was given this video as a present for my birthday today by an old school mate and thought I’d share it here.

I was in Red Square (Moscow) back in 1984 — didn’t feel anything like it did this night…..

Baseball Training: Give Yourself a Rays

Here’s an action-packed clip from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. I discuss the two keys to taking your team or yourself to the next level…

Baseball Training: How Not to Think

This clip is a couple of days old but still relevant.

It’s the Red Sox Tim Wakefield bemoaning their late season slump.

Of course he’s bummed because they just lost a game — no problem with that.

But listen to what he says to the question at about the :56 second mark.

“I don’t know.”

Well, I know!

And YOU know… if you’ve read PLAY BIG.  You know how to generate confidence.

You know how to grab your “brain’s reigns” and turn yourself around.

Here, let me spell it out:

1. Erase the negative emotions (tap them out — talking about it or “drinking it over” isn’t going to help.

2. Replace them with positive emotions using the ABC exercises.

3.  Go out and do your ABCs.

Will this a sure victory?

No.  The Sox may be golfing sooner than they thought.

But it will give them their best chance at winning.  It is a vastly superior strategy than waiting until something clicks.

(The REAL key it to have been training yourself to do this for a long time so you’re good at it.)

If you wait around for something good to happen you’re a victim of circumstance.

If you PLAY BIG, you are driving the bus.

Drive well.

Baseball Training: The Really Big Leagues

Well, here’s one that might seem out of left field, but I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.

Fiona Apple is an amazing artist and here she reveals a great deal about where she’s coming from.

One thing I know about elite performers is that they relate to their craft differently than non-elites.

What would it be like to approach baseball this way?  Can you relate to what she is saying in any way?

To me one big distinction is how connected she is to what she is doing.  Too often baseball (or softball, or anything we’re doing) see so much like it is something outside of us, disconnected.  Pretty hard to get the yips or “choke” with this approach.

Also, notice how as she matured she shifted from writing and singing to prove something to now just doing it for the love of it. Big shift if you can make it while you’re young enough to still play.

I’d enjoy your comments on this.

Ode to U.S. Women’s Soccer

I want to take this moment to acknowledge the US
Women’s Soccer team. They made such a great run at it.

But sometimes you’re on the wrong end of magic.

I saw it as being the “other team” in a sports movie.

You know how there’s one team the story revolves
around and then they get to the championship and they
upset some powerhouse team.

I thought we were the team the movie was about, but
turns out it was about Japan and all they’ve been
through.

Can’t you just see a Japanese version of the movie
“Miracle” of that team? Tsunami plus other stories of
struggle and then play a team you’ve never beaten in
23 tries for the World Championship…

And all the opponent’s shots in the first have hit the
goal posts.

And they fall behind twice.

Great stuff.

And what’s great about it is the emotion it kicks up.

Sports revolve around emotion.

That’s why it’s important to develop your “emotional
skills.”

I thought we were going to win until I saw their coach laughing
right before the penalty kicks.  Our butts got tight and
they were enjoying the moment.

Done.

Thank you to US Women’s soccer. You certainly played big.

Sincerely,
Dr. Tom

Best Game Ever? Here’s the case for it…

I’d rank the U.S. victory on Saturday over Brazil in
Women’s World Cup Soccer amongst the top 5 most
exciting events I’ve watched on TV.

For sure Top 5 loudest yells I’ve made watching TV.

When we scored the lastest goal in the history of the
World Cup it was one of those moments where you have a
hard time believing what you just saw.

The game was OVER — all except for the ref’s final
whistle.

You can still watch the game on ESPN3.com (click on
Replays, then Saturday at 11am)

So much I could comment on — but since I’m gunning to
get some work done before the France match at 11:30am
Eastern, I’ll keep it to one thing.

It was one of the all-time great examples of
“comeuppance.” Readers of PLAY BIG will recognize this
as the law the simplifies the universe — that
basically says you get what you have coming to you….

With nearly zero time left the Brazillians had already
been giving one yellow card for stalling. Then, as
shown on replay, one of their woman totally faked an
injury.

Watch the replay — she just plopped herself down on
the ground. So long they called for a stretcher. Then,
while being carted off, she rips off the belts holding
her on the stretcher and runs off the field.

Then, (for stupid!), she comes back on the field to
play! The ref gives her a yellow card for faking, then
they play on.

And on.

And on!

The ref kept the game going I felt long after she
“should” have — even adding injury time.

The announcers were giving the U.S. team’s eulogy. It
was over.

Then game a spectacular U.S. goal. JUSTICE! It’s one
thing to delay a bit but Brazil went too far and the
universe slapped them in the face.

(Often comeuppance doesn’t come that fast, but it
comes.)

Then a tremendous show of confidence in the penalty
kicks. Our women were money. Totally solid. Flawless.

On the Brazillian PK miss an announcer said she could
feel the doubt on the kicker before the kick.

There you go — everything is energy …. so energy is
everything.

The U.S. vibe was amazing after the game — fun to
watch and feel.

The danger now is recovering in time to beat a good
France team.

Hope you can watch it — I’m no soccer fan but love
events when the emotion could be carved with a knife.

Take whatever lesson you want from all this, there are
so many.

Go U.S.
