White Sox Scandal: Get Your RAS in Gear for Better Baseball Coaching!
It’s 8:07am and I’m slowly getting steamed.
Angelina (3) is crying in the back seat.
She doesn’t want to get out of the car and go into her day
care.
And I can’t find her black socks.
“I KNOW I put the dang black socks right in the front seat
with me when we left.”
But they are no where to be found.
Very frustrating, but having done a nice morning practice
where I center myself and connect emotionally to who I want
to be/am, I don’t totally lose it.
So I punt on the socks and solve the tears buy challenging
Angelina to a race to the front door.
Off she goes… (and as always, she beats me.)
Returning to my car, I sit down, move the dog off the
console, and what do you think I saw sitting there in plain
site?
Angelina’s WHITE socks.
——————-
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, INTRODUCING, THE ONE, THE ONLY….
Reticular Activating System!
(crowd roars)
I was so stuck on the idea that her socks where black (my
son’s are today, that’s where it came from) that the shiny
white socks jumping up and down, calling my name didn’t
register on my conscious mind.
Does that make me an idiot?
No, it means the part of my brain called the Reticular
Activating System is working well.
The “RAS” helps us filter the infinite stimuli that come
into our senses all day. As I understand it, we tell it
what to look for and it filters everything coming in with
that in mind.
I told it to look for black socks and it correctly didn’t
find any.
“SO WHAT?”
So this is as big as it gets: We see what we want to see.
Another way to say RAS is “attitude.” Your mood, “vibe,”
and overall happiness are determined by what you are
looking for.
Are you looking for what’s good or what’s bad?
What works or what doesn’t work?
What’s possible or what’s always happened?
What you’re grateful for or how you’re getting hosed?
How much you deserve success or how you’re a total loser?
Whatever you’re looking for you find.
======
How we set our RAS to determines the very nature of our
lives.
======
So choose wisely today. The holiday’s encourage us to press
“re-set” in our minds as to what’s important and what’s
wise to set our RAS to.
The typical player/person let’s chance set their RAS.
The fulfilled person sets his/her RAS very deliberately.
Choose,
Tom Hanson, Ph.D.
